The European Experience of José Carlos Mariátegui

In 1919, José Carlos Mariátegui and César Falcón founded the newspaper La Razón, which was critical of the government of Augusto B. Leguía. This fact justified them being forced to travel to Europe as propaganda agents for the Peruvian government in Italy, a subtle form of deportation.

The following is a timeline of events of this trip that would last about two and a half years (1919-1923). This time was decisive for Mariátegui’s intellectual and ideological formation.
